“This work derives its title from a passage about Chinese philosopher Hui Shi, written by his successor Zhuang Zhou, in which Hui Shi remarks on the freedom of minnows to swim with the current and with no destination. Much like this passage, the photomontage seeks to illustrate the dilemma of choice and the weight of responsibility as a descendant of one’s family, through the use of both contemporary print images and varied found chinoiserie elements.”
